Hamden, Conn. - The American International College ice hockey team dropped a closely played contest 3-2, to the Quinnipiac Bobcats Tuesday evening, in a non-conference match-up at the TD Banknorth Sportscenter. Scoring for the Yellow Jackets was freshman
Steve McLeod (Atikoka, Ont.) and senior
Mark Pavli (Sarnia, Ont.). The win moves the Bobcats to 2-2-0 overall while the loss drops AIC to 0-2-0 overall.
The Bobcats earned the contest's first goal 12 minutes into the first-frame when Bryan Leitch took a feed from David Marshall right out in front of the net and flicked the puck past AIC netminder
Tom Fenton (Sarnia, Ont.). Fenton turned away five shots in the first-period.
AIC tied the scored 45 seconds later, when a host of Yellow Jackets peppered Bobcat goalie Peter Vetri with shots, before McLeod pushed the puck to the back of the net. Senior defensemen
Chris Bolognino (Carol Stream, Ill.) was credited with an assist on the game-tying score.
Both teams reeled off six shots in a very evenly played first-stanza.
Quinnipiac garnered the lead and the only goal of the second-period on the power-play at the 11:26 marker. Ben Nelson flew in front of the crease after taking a pass from Dan Henningson and snapped a shot past Fenton, making the score 2-1.
AIC tied the score 17 seconds into the third-period when Pavli blasted a shot between the legs of Vetri, tying the score at two.
Jereme Tendler (Viceroy, Sask.) and
Chris Campanale (Chester Springs, Pa.) each tallied an assist on the goal.
David Marshall earned his second point of the evening just over 10 minutes into the final-period when he scored a power-play goal, beating Fenton on a slap-shot from outside the circle. Brandon Wong and Dan Travis each earned assists on the eventually game-winner.
AIC applied heavy pressure in Bobcat territory for the rest of the match, but couldn't tie the score before the end of the game.
Quinnipiac out shot the Yellow Jackets 30-17. Fenton turned away 27 shots, playing well in net for AIC all evening. Vetri stopped 15 shots for the Bobcats.
AIC will take on the Bentley Falcons this weekend in a home-in-home series. Friday night the two squads will square off in Watertown, Mass. before AIC's home opener Saturday evening at the Olympia Ice Center in West Springfield.
